HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – A traffic stop at a gas station near downtown became a crime scene Saturday afternoon.

Sergeant Christopher Grubbs with Huntsville Police says an officer attempted to pull over a car with multiple people inside.

The car pulled over into the MapCo gas station on University Drive just west of Memorial Parkway.

According to police, the driver stepped out of the car and the officer attempted to pat him down after seeing contraband on the man’s seat.

At that point, according to Sgt. Grubbs, the driver pulled away and threw a punch at the officer and a scuffle ensued.

One officer has a possibly sprained thumb and another has scrapes and scratches.

Police say the driver was not injured but will face charges once all witnesses are interviewed by investigators.

The other people in the car will not be charged, according to Grubbs.
