Close call for Twiggy the Water Skiing Squirrel
MOBILE, Ala. (WHNT)- Twiggy the Skiing Squirrel escaped tragedy Saturday afternoon.According to our news partners at AL.com, a spectator unintentionally knocked a loudspeaker into the act’s makeshift pool during a performance at the Mobile Boat Show.
Twiggy’s owner, LouAnn Best said the speaker landed about 2 feet in front of the miniature boat pulling the 7-year-old female squirrel’s plastic skis. The skis are tethered by a cable another couple feet behind the boat’s stern.
“Twiggy has gotten loose before, but that’s the first time I’ve ever had a speaker fall into the water,” Best said.
Best said Twiggy was never in real danger, but got scared when the speaker fell into the water near the end of her 1 p.m. performance.
She leapt to the pool’s 2-foot-tall edge, and then hopped on the shoulders of several of the 50 or so startled children seated on the ground around it before disappearing under a nearby vendor’s table set up on the upper concourse at the Arthur Outlaw Convention Center.
“That was a traumatic thing for her to see that speaker fall in the water right in front of her and she got scared. She said, ‘I’m out of here,’” Best said. “It’s really my fault. I shouldn’t have put it that close to the water.”
Twiggy was on the loose for about 30 minutes before a banana placed in her cage coaxed her to return on her own, Best said.
The makeshift pool where Twiggy skis is also fitted with a grounding device that prevented any chance of the squirrel or Best and an assistant who were standing in it at the time from being electrocuted.
Best expects Twiggy to go on for the remainder of her scheduled shows through Sunday.
“We may have to let run her around one time to let her know it’s OK,” Best said. “I think she’ll be fine.”
