FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT)– Florence Police say an officer is recovering from his injuries after an attack Sunday morning.

Officer John Byrd received some stitches at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital after police say a DUI suspect attacked him, striking him several times in the face.

The suspect, Jeffery Wade Martin, 53, of Florence, has been charged with Assault on a Police Officer, DUI, Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, Attempting to Elude, and Resisting Arrest.

Police say Martin had wrecked at Jackson Road and Cox Creek Parkway earlier Sunday morning, and had fled into a wooded area by the time police arrived.

He was found hiding within a short time, and taken to the hospital to be checked. But he became violent with Officer Byrd while there.

Martin is being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center on $9000 bond.
