FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) - A married couple was sentenced Thursday in Lauderdale County for making child pornography. The child was in their custody.

Judge Mike Jones sentenced Matthew and Patricia Ayers, telling them they would both spend the rest of their natural lives in prison.

Going into the sentencing hearing, both the Ayers had pleaded guilty to sodomy and producing child pornography with a 6-year-old girl they had custody of.

"That was our number one objective, was to get this type of result without having to put this child through anymore trauma," said Will Powell, Lauderdale County Assistant District Attorney.

During the sentencing, Judge Jones got gritty with the Ayers as he read off their sentences.  "In my 35 years in this courthouse I have never seen such a vile and disgusting case," he said.  "You both will die in prison."

Powell says the life sentences for both will be enhanced because of the acts, and they won't be eligible for parole.  "We wanted to make sure they die in prison since we can't give them the death penalty," he said.

Both expressed remorse during the sentencing.  "I didn't get enough.  I will never get enough," Patricia Ayers said on her way back to jail.

Family members of the victim say they are hopeful the little girl can put the horrific events she experienced behind her one day.

Prosecutors say if the Ayers ever find a way to make parole with the sentences in Alabama, they will then have to serve more than 2,000 years in federal prison.
