REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (WHNT) - More than 200,000 service members are expected to transition into civilian life this year.

However, a national survey from the University of Phoenix shows only about a third of these veterans have a transition plan.

To help more veterans find a path to employment, the US Small Business Administration is working with the Department of Defense to offer the Boots to Business program.

Boots to Business is designed to educate veterans on the steps needed for self-employment.

During the free course at Redstone Arsenal this week, more than a dozen participants learned how to evaluate business concepts, develop a business plan, access start-up capital and find technical assistance.

The Women's Business Center of North Alabama helped organize the event.

The next course will be offered in April. Email info@wbcna.org for more information.
