HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) –  Ryan Edward Newberry is in jail with no bond after a standoff with police Sunday night at the Hampton Inn & Suites in the Hampton Cove area.

Madison County Sheriff’s deputies tell WHNT News 19 that at approximately 7:36 Sunday evening, they, along with Huntsville Police, responded to reports of a theft of a large amount of money and an iPhone.

Authorities say they tracked the phone which led them to the Hampton Inn where the suspect was staying. Police say the man, now identified as Ryan Edward Newberry, then barricaded himself and his female companion in the room.

At that point, Madison County deputies say they called in the SWAT team, a K-9 unit, as well as Owens Cross Roads police, Alabama State Troopers, a HEMSI, and Huntsville Fire & Rescue.

A forty-five minute negotiation ensued, and authorities evacuated the active floor of the hotel. Authorities say the man and woman in the hotel room eventually surrendered peacefully.

Newberry was taken to jail and booked on first degree felony theft charges. The female companion was released and will not be charged.

Monday, Madison County investigators went back to search Newberry’s vehicle and hotel room where they found more stolen items including marijuana and stolen prescription medication. They saw additional felony drug possession charges are being filed against him.

The investigation is ongoing but investigators say it is very likely the items found Monday will be used to file more charges against Newberry and possibly link him to other crimes.
