ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) – An Athens man charged with the murder of his grandmother has pleaded guilty.

James Pigg was scheduled to go on trial this morning in Limestone County.  However, he pleaded guilty to murder before the trial started.  A judge sentenced him to life in prison.

This was Pigg’s fifth trial date.  There have been numerous delays and attorney changes in the case, which dates back to March 2012.

That’s when authorities say Pigg beat Barbara Delaney with a hammer, then shot and killed her as she tried to crawl away.

The two shared a home.

Delaney had been trying to evict her grandson.
