HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - The Downtown Rescue Mission is preparing to distribute food boxes to hundreds of families who can't afford all the fixings for a holiday meal.

Last week, the Mission issued an urgent appeal for turkey donations.  They needed about 700 birds.

Many of you donated turkeys, helping them get close to that number.   We checked with the Mission on Monday to see if they met the goal and they were so appreciative of the help they've received so far.  A spokesperson said they could still use some more turkeys, so they've extended the deadline until Tuesday, November 18.

If you can help, please drop off fresh or frozen turkeys at the Mission's main campus, located at 1400 Evangel Drive, Huntsville, AL 35810.  You can also make a monetary donation online.

The turkey boxes will be distributed to families on Monday and Tuesday, November 24 and 25 after a special service in the chapel. The food boxes will also contain stuffing, green beans, yams, fruit, rolls and other items.

The Downtown Rescue Mission provides food, clothing, and shelter to the homeless of northern Alabama and southern Tennessee. For more information on the Downtown Rescue Mission, please visit Downtownrescuemission.org.

Several downtown Grocers are having great sales on turkeys for as low as $8.50 in specials!!! Most of us can “fork over a frozen turkey” for $8.50!!!
Let’s be generous so that all can have the feast that most of us have had all our lives!!
For those of us who have never known hunger as our brothers & sisters who do without all the time…please give!
