Huntsville, Ala. (WHNT)-  If you have driven between Shields Road and Moores Mill Road on Highway 72,  you've probably noticed orange barrels on the side of the road.   These have been put up as the Alabama Department of Transportation begins works on a new lane project.

"You definitely need to have a quarter of  a tank of gas if you're going to start up over that hill because you never know how long you're going to be there," Brian Clark told WHNT News 19.

Clark runs Chase Chiropractic on Moores Mill.   He says improvements are needed because the roads just cannot handle the volume of traffic.

"It's real bad going into town in the morning.  It's always backed up and sometimes it will back up all the way to here, which is two miles from 72."

Johnny Harris with the ALDOT office in Guntersville says crews will soon start to add a third lane westbound between Shields and Moores Mill.   Improvements will also be made to the merge lane from Moores Mill onto 72.

The construction could take around two years to complete.

What makes you think that Huntsville cares about the people of Madison? How long have they been promising to fix 72 in Madison even though most of the stores on that stretch are collecting taxes for Huntsville?

I hope this will actually help – it’s already added five minutes to get from Shields Rd over the mountain at 7:15. I’d rather see them just go ahead and start on the extension of 565 past Shields and be done with it!
