Huntsville, AL-The Chattanooga Lookouts led wire-to-wire Thursday night in the Southern League North Division Playoffs and held off the Huntsville Stars with a 4-3 victory. The Lookouts lead the best-of-five series 1-0 as it continues Friday in Huntsville.
The Lookouts didn’t waste any time scoring early runs off Huntsville starter Drew Gagnon(0-1). In the top of the first inning, Daniel Mayora struck an rbi double over centerfielder Erik Komatsu’s head giving the Lookouts a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second, Chris O’Brien and O’Koyea Dickson hit back to back homers against Gagnon making it 3-0.
The Stars chipped away at the deficit against Chattanooga starter Andres Santiago(1-0) In the bottom of the third inning, Nick Shaw poked an rbi single down the left field line scoring Yadiel Rivera making it 3-1. With the Stars trailing 4-1, Hector Gimenez brought the Stars a run closer in the bottom of the sixth. Gimenez, homered to dead center against Santiago making it 4-2. Santiago, who earned the in pitched six innings and allowed four hits on two runs.
The Stars scored a run late in the eighth against Lookouts reliever Mike Thomas. Orlando Arcia, who made his Double-A debut for the Stars, doubled down the right field line to start the inning. Arcia, later scored in the inning on Josh Fellhauer’s groundout to the shortstop cutting the Lookouts lead to 4-3. Jhan Marinez and Daniel Coulombe combined to retire the Stars 1-2-3 in the ninth. Coulombe earned the save as he struck out Nick Ramirez to end the game.
Gagnon, who took the loss for the Stars pitched 4.2 innings and allowed eight hits on four runs. He walked one and struck out six.
The Stars will try and even the series at 1-1 Friday night at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville. The Stars will send RHP Austin Ross(2-3, 3.12) to the mound. Chattanooga will feature RHP Steve Smith(3-2, 2.76) on the hill. The game can be heard with Steve Jarnicki starting at 6:15 CDT on the internet only at wtkiradio.com
