Rogersville cyclist killed, another injured in Labor Day collision with car

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate a crash involving two bicycles and a passenger car on Monday near Anderson.  One of the cyclists died, and another was seriously hurt.

Troopers say James Keith Green, 40, of Rogersville was killed when the bicycle he was riding was struck by a car.  Another cyclist, Mannon Rogers, 38, was also injured in the accident.  He was taken to Huntsville Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

As of Tuesday morning, Rogers’ condition had been upgraded from critical to serious.

The crash occurred on Alabama 207 one mile north of Anderson.

Alabama State Troopers have not commented on whether or not charges will be filed in the wreck.

    It is very important for motorists to leave a large gap between the auto and the bicyclist or motorcyclist. It is so easy for the bicycle or motorcycle to loose grip on our roads, especially county roads, where there are more defects and patches to the road surface creating a surface that can easily cause the cyclist to slide and go down, or pop a tire with much the same result. If you are too close you will run these people over. Keep in mind it is also harvest time and there are many very large, cumbersome farm machines on the road, again especially on county roads, where the machine can take up more than half the road. These drivers need to have the respect of other drivers and it doesn’t take to much time to pull off the road and let the machine through. Be aware, be courteous and be safe.

      there are trails and paths for bicycle riders in Alabama . If they are gonna use the paved roads they need to by insurance and pay a tax for tags just like the rest of us who use the roads.

    It’s a better idea to ride the opposite side of the traffic. I actually use the entire road now. I’ve been hit from behind and you can’t trust any driver behind you. Forget about obeying bike traffic rules. It’s you against them and you only get 1 chance to avoid being hit. Your best option is to use the entire road separating yourself from the 1-2 ton vehicles.

    On another website covering the same story there is a comment challenging car drivers! Dude thinks he is bullet-proof! Read the Alabama state law! Bicycle riders are to be as far to the right as practicable! Also, I received a ticket one time for going too slow…40 in a 65. I had engine problems. I was told that I was creating a dangerous situation by moving 25 mph BELOW the posted speed limit but yet a bicycle can move at 15 mph in a 50 mph zone? If there ever was a dangerous situation for both the bicycle and the automobile, THAT WOULD BE IT! I can’t believe some bicycle riders are willing to martyr themselves for an issue ALDOT should be forced to handle and correct via legislative avenues. Try crossing the Memorial Parkway sometime! HAHAHA…they will build an overpass for motor vehicles but no walkway, bridge, or even a cross walk! Valhalla Memorial Gardens….Huntsville Memorial Parkway, no difference! Huntsville is a joke when it comes to the human aspect.

    Radical bicyclist are in town. The: It’s-My-Right-Bicyclists are on the hunt to push the limits against motorized vehicles. They will create an incident in order to file charges against motorist. They don’t have a right to impede traffic, use the whole lane, or otherwise create a hazzard. Taxes are paid to build and maintain roads and highways for appropriate speeds. Motorist need a coalition formed with their state reps to legislate bicycles off roads of over 25 mph and create requirements for taxing bicyclist to build and maintain bicycle biways.

    Bicyclists have the right to observe, and protect themselves at ALL times, from the dangers of traffic. Kinda like you do not step out in front of a oncoming train, or 18-wheeler, even an automobile.

    YES! If it moves under the control of a human and is designed to transport said human then by all means, license and tax the darn things and have the proceeds fund the extra couple of feet on each side of the roadway for suicidal bicyclists. AND YES, speed constraints and limitations need to be addressed. At no time should I have to brake my vehicle to avoid a bicyclist. The cause of such would be neglect of the bicyclist to yield to faster moving traffic and a flagrant disregard of the laws and statutes of Alabama by creating an unnecessary and dangerous road hazard. If the powers that be can put good money into skateboarding parks and dog parks and other unnecessary luxury items, they can certainly do something to curb this potential war between motorists and bicycle Nazis. But alas, they can’t even do things to help and protect pedestrians!

    This kind of stuff is not going to change no matter what. There are drivers out there who should be declared legally blind and others that drive in their own little world oblivious as what is around them. I sure wouldn’t risk my life riding on a road with busy traffic thinking I was safe. I think bicyclist need to rethink the roads they ride…. If you value your life!

    Seems to me that all of your energy and frustrations would be better directed at getting the local government to create a separate bike path network throughout the city.

    GOVERNER……Not for their bicycle they don’t……you do realize you pay taxes on each of the motorized vehicles you own?

    And, the vehicle taxes they pay goes for building roads to accommodate a volume of traffic at a set speed in order to have an efficient and safe transport of people & commodities to conduct business and their lives in general for the benifit of the whole community. Bicyclist endangering themselves and everyone around them serves no benefit to the community, in fact, it’s a detriment.

    I have a right to fly my helocopter; can I move next door to you and land it in my driveway? No. Because it would endanger you, me, our neighbors, and be a general nuisance to the community, not a benefit.

    Roads are believed to be designed for cars and not for bicycles. Motorists think they own the roads. Getting in the way of cars is supposedly an invitation to certain death, because car drivers are expected to run into anything that is slower or more vulnerable. Motorists who claim that they may not be able to avoid running down a slow cyclist from behind quickly abandon that argument when they realize they are arguing the case for their own incompetence. Avoiding a rear-end collision with a slower vehicle traveling in the same direction is the easiest traffic task required of drivers of vehicles. Failure to avoid rear-ending slower road users indicates a driver’s gross negligence, failure to drive within his sight distance, failure to maintain control of his vehicle, or lack of basic fitness as a driver. Such drivers are a threat to the safety of everyone else on the road and not just to bicyclists in particular.

      Do you believe roads are designed for bicyclist ? Or are you just hoping to convience everyone they are regarless ? And yes, getting in the way of a car is indeed an invitation to death; even though car drivers are not really expected to run into anything thats slower or more vulnerable.

      Of course a car may not be able to slow down quick enough when doing a 50 mph speed limit and suddenly encountering a slender bicycle without any lights traveling at say 10 mph. That is a legitimate arguement that addresses the judgement or incompetence of the bicyclist.

      Avoiding a rear-end collision with a car or truck is certainly easy in most situatioins. But then the car or truck is has wide as the lane and has lights. Even motorcyclist have lights, but their narrowness is deadly to them juat as it is with the bicyclist.

      You sound like a radical bicyclist. Why don’t you take it a step further and declare that you can simply walk down the middle of the road as well. I’d be interested to hear your arguement either for or against allowing anyone to walk down the road, on the pavement.

      Just admit it, selfishly, you want to ride your bicycle on any road or highway regarless of it’s dangers or inconvienence to others. You don’t want to be responsible for your actions, others must be.You don’t want to put forth the effort to inact taxes on bicyclist high enough to build bicycle lanes.You’re a radical bicyclist who just has to have a cause outrageous enough get on everyone elses nerves to get through life.

    The point of riding toward oncoming traffic isn’t the closing speed, it’s the fact the bicyclist can see the cars coming. I’d much rather see a car coming than not. Weather the closing speed is 15 or a 100 mph doesn’t matter if you see the car and are thereby able to stay out of it’s way.
