Meridianville Middle School student passes away after medical complications

MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) - The Hazel Green community is dealing with the loss of a Meridianville Middle School student who passed away Friday.

The family tells WHNT News 19  eighth-grader Will Walker died from a chronic lung disease and a staph infection following cancer treatment. He has been battling acute myeloid leukemia.

On behalf of Superintendent David Copeland and the entire school system, I express my deepest sympathies to the Walker family and friends during this most difficult time," district spokeswoman Geraldine Tibbs said in a statement.

"Will will be missed by his teachers, classmates, football team, friends, and the entire Meridianville Middle School Family. We offer our deepest condolences to the family; our thoughts and prayers are with them."

Counselors are available at the school to help students deal with the loss of their classmate.

Community members planned a car wash for Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at Advance Auto in Hazel Green. Those funds will go towards supporting Will's family.

Visitation for Will is set for Sunday at Berryhill Funeral Home from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.  The family asks people to wear red or white to celebrate Will's life.
The funeral is Monday at First Baptist Church in Meridianville.
