Mental Health Center of Madison County changes names to overcome painful stigma

MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – Thursday evening during the Huntsville City Council meeting, leaders from the not-for-profit county mental health center announced some major changes coming soon.

Beginning Oct. 1, the Mental Health Center of Madison County will start using the name “WellStone Behavioral Health.”  The organization’s Chief Executive Officer Brian Davis says the new logo and name will hopefully help attract more people to come seek help.

“Research shows that two-thirds of the people who need help do not get it and the biggest reason is the stigma that comes along with seeking help,” Davis says.

The group served nearly nine thousand people last year. They are a not-for-profit organization that receives tax money and grants to operate. The organization has an operating budget of  about 14-million dollars.

Then avoid him. It is far too facile to call prejudice and discrimination “stigma.” It is also unprofessional, and unethical for him to do so. He may, in the privacy of a session, respond to any prejudice a person may present. He may not direct his own, as he has done here.

Apparently this prejudice is also yours, or you would not have chosen the quote: Your prejudice is not my “stigma.” Your prejudice does not define me, it defines you.

whats the matter Harold? what don’t you understand here? A lot of the clients of that facility belong to the justice system, you know, the courts. They only go there because their situations are court ordered and they have no choice lest they do time. In any other circumstance, they wouldn’t go. its what it is.
