LINCOLN, Tn. (WHNT) – New leadership comes to Lincoln County.  The county’s mayor-elect, Bill Newman, will be sworn in on Thursday.

The swearing-in comes a little ahead of schedule.  It was originally set for Monday, September 1st , but federal offices will be closed due to Labor Day.

Newman will be sworn in at the Lincoln County Commission meeting.

He campaigned on a platform of change for Lincoln County, saying leaders had to become more proactive in economic development.  He says the county must do a better job of marketing itself to create new job opportunities and increase tourism.

Newman won the August primary with nearly 36 percent of the vote.

Following the swearing-in at 6:00 pm, Newman won’t immediately take office.

An interim mayor was recently appointed to serve until September 1st, due to the current mayor’s illness.

WHNT News 19 was told Mayor Peggy Bevels is making progress in her recovery.

She is currently being treated in Huntsville, after suffering an apparent stroke earlier this summer.
