HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The ice bucket challenge spread as quickly as ice melting in the Alabama heat.
Tuesday, members of the staff at the Crestwood Medical Center’s ALS Clinic in Huntsville took their turn under the bucket.
They know the disease all too well and see it up close on a daily basis.
“The staff here at this clinic will do anything within their power to help people with ALS,” said Cassie Barber, Executive Director of the ALS Association Alabama Chapter.
Recognized nationally as a certified center of excellence, the ALS Clinic performs innovative procedures and research.
“It offers the patients, a patient-centered approach in medicine, which is really kind of the cutting edge of medicine right now,” said co-medical director Dr. Aruna Arora. “Especially for ALS patients, who have so many physical mobility issues.”
It also provides those afflicted with the fatal disease unprecedented care.
“We just offer them an understanding of what they’re going through, as well as options for maximizing their independence and having a good quality of life, as well as helping the family deal and cope and make it easier on everyone involved,” said physical therapist Susanne Cumming.
Rick Isaacs was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease less than a year ago.
He says he does not know where he would be without the support of the ALS Clinic and the ALS Association Alabama Chapter.
“They work hand-in-hand and it’s been my lifeline,” said Isaacs. “When I was diagnosed, I had no clue what to do. I didn’t know where I was going. I didn’t even know anything about the disease.”
Thanks to his support system at the clinic and the ice bucket challenge, Isaacs says he feels a little less alone in his fight.
“They’re my family and every one of them, I can truly say that I love them because they are good to me.”
