Christian Women’s Job Corps of Madison County Helping Women Move Forward in Life

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – WHNT NEWS 19 made Elaine Dickson’s day when we showed up with $319 in cash! She’s part of an organization that’s helping women do so many positive things. That could be getting a GED, landing a scholarship, finding a job or improving their resume. The Christian Women’s Job Corps of Madison County is truly motivating women to be the best they can be.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future.” This bible verse perfectly sums up the mission of the Christian Women’s Job Corps of Madison County.

“We want to move them toward self sufficiency,” says Executive Director Elaine Dickson. “We’re tyring to let as many women know that we’re here for them. We’re a great resource if they want to move forward in their life. “

Dickson oversees four locations – one in Madison and three in Huntsville.

“If they want to go back to school, get a better job, learn some skills, we’re here for them and it’s a free program,” explains Dickson.

One site operates out of First Baptist Church, which has a computer lab for students to come and update resumes, learn basic computer skills, and search for jobs. It’s a hands-on experience for some, who are starting from scratch.

“Some of the women are not very comfortable with a mouse even,” describes Dickson.

By teaching basic skills, the organization helps build a foundation for women to take that next step.

“Many times it’s giving her the confidence she needs to go out and work toward her goals,” says Dickson.

During the nine month program, the class schedules are as diverse as the students. Madison site coordinator Susan Elder says don’t let circumstances or fear discourage you.

“Just give it a try,” says Elder. “Always move forward. Take that step to better yourself.”

Mentors will be there, leading, guiding and supporting the students along the way.

The $319 we gave the organization will be used to buy flash drives and gift cards to office supply stores. The women use the flash drives to store their resumes and other work done in the computer lab.
