Decatur, Ala. – (WHNT) Austin Missed the playoffs in 2013 thanks to losing the tiebreaker with rival Decatur. As much as that hurt the Black Bears this off-season, Austin may have been hurt more by graduation. 15 starters walked across the stage last Spring, leaving the team in search a new lineup on Friday nights. That’s not easy for any head coach to deal with, but Jeremy Perkins has been planning for it.
“We try to develop all of our players so when we do have kids that graduate we have other guys that are ready to step in and take their job. We have guys stepping into those jobs that we feel confident can do those jobs, they just need game experience.”
That kind of experience is invaluable and the Black Bears hope to learn while winning. If they win, it will be thanks in some part to new quarterback Brandon Schreiber.
“I’ve been patient in waiting for my turn, it’s finally here and I hope we go far. I hope we make it to the playoffs and make a deep run. Hope we have a great season for the school and have everybody excited about it. It’s going to be fun.”
No jamboree for Austin this year, choosing instead for a bye week in October. The Black Bears go on the road August 22nd to face Spain Park.
