HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Wednesday was a very good day for the Lacey’s Spring Volunteer Fire Department. The department received 15 new sets of turnout gear, worth more than $31,200.

The donation came from Firehouse Subs. The restaurant chain was founded by firefighters and routinely donates to public service agencies and first responders.

The Lacey’s Spring VFD is made up of 32 members who respond to fires, emergency medical calls, water rescues and wrecks. The training is intense. The job is dangerous and time-consuming.

As volunteers, they do it all for free, risking their own lives to protect their friends and neighbors. EMS Captain Marion Studer explains says it’s simply, “dedication to the community. It’s wanting to help people.”

The turnout gear will provide better protection for these protectors of the community. Capt. Studer, who applied for the grant from Firehouse Subs, call the gear “the latest and greatest,” adding that the material is the best available in deflecting heat that can reach 3,000 degrees.

While the department primarily serves the five square mile area of Lacey’s Spring, members also provide mutual aid support to departments in Brindlee Mountain, Cotaco, Toluca and Somerville.
