Getting Results: 6th grade band reinstated in Scottsboro
SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (WHNT)- 6th grade band is back in Scottsboro. However, it was gone for several days after reportedly being cut to give students more time to focus on testing.
“I thought it was a big blow to the band,” said Denise Piskorz. “I think it’s very devastating.”
Piskorz says she found out over the weekend that school officials had decided to end 6th grade band. She says the reason’s she heard just didn’t make any sense.
“It helps them in so many areas,” she said. “Socially, academically, it’s proven. You don’t have to take my word for it, because it’s proven in so many places that the earlier you start with music education, the better students do academically.”
WHNT News 19 reached out to the school superintendent for comment. She did not return out phone calls. However, several hours later we were informed by the principal at Collins Intermediate School that band had been reinstated for 6th graders.
The news was scheduled to be announced to parents at an open house Tuesday night. Piskorz says she was very pleased.
“I met the new band instructor yesterday evening. And he is capable of working with 6th grade students.”
