Man charged in deaths of 4 teens requests youthful offender status

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The man accused of killing four teens and injuring others is asking to be tried as a youthful offender.

Monday afternoon inside courtroom number one at the Marshall County Courthouse, the two right front rows were packed with different people who have one thing in common. They’re waiting to see what this latest court proceeding will bring Adrian Renteria.

Renteria is charged in the deaths of four teens, stemming from a car accident on 431 near Guntersville last year.

Cheryl Cordell and her husband have gone to every court proceeding Renteria has had scheduled. Their daughter was one of the teens killed. “We basically want to know what’s going on, when the trial might be set, because we’re going to have a trial, and we’ll be here every time to stand up for our kids,” Cordell says.

Renteria is requesting to be charged as a youthful offender. He will have to put in an application for that status, an evaluation will be performed and then a hearing will take place where the judge will either grant or deny that request.

The District Attorney’s Office says if the judge grants that request, Renteria’s trial will be shortly after.

For Cordell and all of the other family members of the teens killed in the crash one year ago, this court appearance is just one step in a long road. “Actually once it’s over I think that will be the beginning of the closure part. That’ll be a big step toward closure, once the trial gets going with.”

Renteria’s hearing is scheduled for late October.
