HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - When the founders of Piper & Leaf Gardens first set up a booth at Greene Street Market it was to sell compost. They figured they would sell iced tea in jars on the side. But a month later they scrapped the compost as their tea business flourished.
"After the first market I got so excited and we just decided let`s branch out," said Caleb Christopher, a co-founder of Piper & Leaf.
At the time Christopher, his wife, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, had no idea how far their little tea business would take them.
"We love to spot jars in pictures and everywhere we go," said Christopher. "It`s super exciting to see that people like it so much."
The herb blends are hand-crafted, featuring fruits and herbs from local farmers.
You can find Piper & Leaf at farmers markets in Huntsville & even Birmingham. They host tea bars at weddings and events, and even launched a Tea of the Month club.
Now, this Saturday, August 2nd, they will welcome the community to their brick-and-mortar store's grand opening at Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment.
"We`re going to have a farmers market outside, without about 20 vendors, we have some food trucks lined up, and we`re going to be doing watermelon at a nickel a slice."
The Old-Time Carnival themed party will feature a cake-walk, petting zoo, and family games, as well as a raffle to win a year of free tea refills.
"I love the customers. I love that everybody we work with is really happy whenever they come to us," said Christopher. "We`re serving them something that makes their day better."
The grand opening celebration - called the "Splendid Shindig" - is from noon to 9 pm Saturday, August 2nd.
