Huntsville, Ala. - (al.com) The nation's coaches have high expectations for Alabama and Auburn.
Both the Crimson Tide and Tigers landed in the top five of the coaches poll released Thursday morning. Alabama was slotted No. 2 behind defending champion Florida State. Auburn, the return runners-up, were No. 5.
Oklahoma was third and Oregon fourth in the first major preseason poll released.
Records for the coaches poll dating back to 1960 aren't easily found so matching top-5 appearances for Alabama and Auburn couldn't be found. In fact, the two haven't been in a preseason top-5 for the Associated Press poll in its history dating back to 1936.
In the past 11 years, the team ranked second in the preseason poll went on to win the title four times. The No. 5 team won it twice. Florida State was a rare champion from outside the top 10 in last year's preseason poll, but will hope to be only the second No. 1 to win a title in the last 12 years.
