LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – A Shoals man has been charged with 32 counts of animal cruelty.

Investigators say they found 16 dead horses on his property and another 16 barely alive.  Of those, two had to be put down.

The man arrested is Horace Mearl White, 65.

Prosecutors say someone reported the animals’ condition to the Lauderdale County District Attorney’s Office on Friday.  The animals were found on a farm off County Road 81 near the Central community.

White was arrested Monday and booked in the Lauderdale County Detention Center.

I wish animal cruelty was a Felony not just a misdemeanor. Animals are NOT just property, they have minds and hearts and they feel pain and hunger and the suffer just like a human would. SO VERY VERY SAD

This man should get a minimum of 1 year for each count of cruelty to animals. Teresa is exactly right!!

It is horrible, but also why are the people that took them begging for money? If they did not have the funds to take care of them, why not give them to someone who can.

I could not agree more!! Why take them from a home that could not feed them and place them with someone else who can not feed them.

I know this is terrible, but he has been so good to people and has took care of animals for a long time. I remember some of these horses were give to him, sold to him for like $25.00?! Now, how many of us from one time or another, bit off more than we could chew……how many of us had good intentions, but failed to go through with our plans?? Though this is bad, in the begining I think my uncle had nothing but a big heart and good intentions, I hate that maybe he had too many irons in the fire. I love my uncle Mearle regardless the outcome, no matter others opinions! Remember this, some mistakes are much bigger than others.

I’m sorry but you say *SOLD* to him for $25 If he couldn’t afford to feed them he shouldn’t have bought them! I don’t care how cheap. There is PLENTY of people to take them. And the second he realized they were going to start starving he could have taken them out in the yard or down the road to eat grass and start trying to get rid of them. There is NO excuse to letting an animal starve. It would be different if it was 1 or 2 that died (but it still isn’t acceptable) but 16 died and 16 were in terrible shape. That’s a bit ridiculous. I have no sympathy. He could have went to the vet and explained to them and they could have helped him.
