Corks & Chefs: Event held Monday night to benefit local organizations

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — It’s an event that showcases the best food Marshall County has to offer, but on the inside it’s benefiting some of the county’s residents that need help most.

Corks and Chefs. The name says it all. It’s a culmination of the best food and drink you’ll find in Marshall County, and as its residents will tell you, it’s pretty good.

What they left out of the name though, is how much this tasty tradition is benefiting the county.

“It’ll impact every area of service that we have,” CASA of Marshall County Executive Director Shirley Holland says.

That organization cares for the county’s elderly and homebound. “Weatherization, pay their power bill, I mean, everything we do is impacted by this fundraiser,” Holland says.

That organization isn’t the only one this fundraiser benefits.”The Child Advocacy Center helps children who have been sexually abused, so obviously we have to raise money locally in order to provide these services,” Child Advocacy Center Executive Director Leslie Wright says.

Corks and Chefs is a way of doing that. “It allows us to meet the needs of our children,” Wright says.

Recently, Wright says they received a call from county officials. That call came after former Guntersville volunteer soccer coach David Barrow was charged in part for production of child pornography.“They notified us and let us know that there were going to be potential victims in a case, and let us know they might be calling on us for their services,” Wright says.

Since then, Wright says the center has been helping those young people. “Giving these families an idea of what to expect and also providing that support throughout that entire process,” she says.

The District Attorney’s office expects more charges in this case, and Wright says the center will be there to offer support.

Corks and Chefs, she says, is a big part in helping them to do just that.

The event will be held Monday evening, from 5:30 until 7:30. Tickets can be bought at the door for $35. There will be wine, music, and of course, food from local restaurants.  The event is located at Guntersville Town Hall.
