ARLINGTON, Va. (WHNT) - Brewer High School senior Matthew Ellow has been elected Boys Nation president. Ellow won on a vote of 52-46 during the annual convention in Arlington, Virginia.
Ellow, who lives in Lacey's Spring, defeated his opponent Joshua Cook from Knoxville, Tennessee by winning the votes of the boys in the Oregon delegation.
According to a press release from the American Legion, the event's sponsor, Ellow spoke to the other boys about the need to restore belief in each other, our Constitution, Americanism and patriotism.
Ellow says he will campaign at Brewer High School to encourage other boys to get involved in Boys State, the Alabama version of Boys Nation.
“And I’m not going to have to do much campaigning," Ellow said in the release. "It took me nine or 10 hours to realize this was going to be the week that shapes who I am as a person."
Being a delegate to Boys Nation is a very prestigious honor. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton was a delegate to the 1963 convention, shaking the hand of President John F. Kennedy.
Ellow will be honored Tuesday at the meeting of the Morgan County Board of Education.
Ryan Truitt was Alabama's other delegate to Boys Nation. He lives in Killen and is a rising senior at Lexington High School.
