James Clemens Hires Legendary Coach Danny Petty Away from Bob Jones

Madison, Ala. – (al.com) Throughout his coaching career, Danny Petty has been the same guy with the same style and same philosophy.

This fall, the same guy will have a new address.

The 63-year-old Petty will step down as Bob Jones’ girls basketball coach and cross Madison to coach boys basketball at city rival James Clemens. Petty’s hire was approved by the Madison City School Board of Education on Friday morning.

“It’s going to be tough,” said Petty, who will enter his 42nd season of coaching in November, the last eight at Bob Jones with six as boys coach and two with the girls team. “I loved it at Bob Jones, but this will be a challenge and get my juices flowing a bit.”

Petty is the only boys basketball coach in AHSAA history to win state championships at three different schools (the trivia answer: J.O. Johnson in 1987, Madison Academyin 2006 and Bob Jones in 2010) and won a state title as a player at Lee in 1968. He also coached at Hazel Green and Lincoln County (Tenn.) and is 15 wins away from 700 for his varsity career.
