GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT)- Voters inside of four of the five proposed fire districts approved paying a five dollar per month fee to support local volunteer fire  departments.  Voters inside of the Georgia Mountain, Hebron, 4-C and Waterfront districts all voted in support of the measure.

However, voters inside of the Swearengin district voted no by a wide margin, 180-70.

Richard Lawson with Georgia Mountain, who had helped organize the measure, was pleased that four of the five passed.   He did say he’s very concerned about the future of the Swearengin department.

As a result of the failure of the effort, the chief and the deputy of the Swearengin Volunteer fire department have resigned, citing the failure of support of the community.

Michael, I would suggest, you join the department and see for yourself. These men and women put themselves in danger every time they answer a call.

If they answer the call that is! The only time I needed them they wouldn’t take the call from the 911 dispatcher. I live one mile away from the station! So I called 911 again to see what was happening, and was told they had to call Arab! When Arab got here they watched the fire burn out. So I had to file a claim on my homeowners!!

Levi, I live in the Pleasant Gove area, the VFD here does a good job of answering a call but, I would still vote NO. Why? Because, I believe in doing something if I have a free will to do it, not be force to do it by law. I freely donate to the VFD with my water bill each month. Again, I do this of my own free will, anyone can !!
