HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - The Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama held its fifth annual Leaders & Legends Dinner Tuesday night at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.
Alabama head coach Nick Saban was the event's featured speaker for the second time since 2010.
Saban's speech centered around a message of leadership and service.
"Happy comes with doing something of significance and it really comes when you do something of significance for someone else," Saban told the crowd.
"[Saban's] involvement is huge for us and we appreciate him and everyone that helped get him here for us," said BGCNAL Board member Craig Herr.
Saban may have been the initial reason more than 1,000 people attended the dinner, but organizers are hoping they leave with more than just a love of Crimson Tide football, but of the Boys & Girls Club, too.
"We don't fool ourselves about why they're here, they're here to see Coach Saban, but when they leave here they understand more about Boys & Girls Clubs," said BGCNAL President Patrick Wynn. "They understand the value of Boys & Girls Clubs."
"It's not really about the event," said Herr. "It's about the children and that's what we try to keep our focus on."
The annual event is the only major fundraiser for the organization.
Tuesday's dinner raised more than $500,000.
"It's our most important night of the year," said Herr. "It's really a celebration of these children and the community coming together to help support these children and it's our biggest fundraiser by far."
"The biggest thing that we're able to do is just to expose the Boys & Girls Club to the community," said Wynn. "A lot of times we assume that people know what we're doing, but this is a great opportunity for us to tell our story."
