Project H.E.A.T. raising heatstroke awareness

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Extreme heat changed Damieon Gentry’s life in a flash.

“I think he just didn’t know what his breaking point was,” said Gentry.

His 27-year-old brother, Casey, died last month from heatstroke.

Now Damieon and his family have made it their mission to make sure others are informed.

“We thought we have to do something about this, get the word out and if we can help save one person’s life, we’re at least doing our job,” said Gentry.

It is called Project H.E.A.T., which stands for Hydrate Everyone at All Times.

The group spent Friday afternoon at Big Spring Park in Huntsville living its mission.

“We’ve pretty much been passing out water for everyone to keep everyone hydrated,” said Gentry.

A free bottle of water to anyone who needs it, along with some knowledge.

“They’ve been telling us they don’t know about it and what not,” said Gentry, “so we just give them the water, inform them, educate them. Hopefully this will help.”

Gentry and his cousin, Brittany Strong, are also collecting donations from money to water to coolers, anything to help prevent what happened to Casey.

“I know my brother would look down and be glad that we’re doing this for him in his honor,” said Gentry.

“Make sure you always tell people you love them because you never know when it could be the last moment,” said Strong.

“It’s really hard,” said Gentry. “It’s been especially hard for my mom, but all you can do is pray and move forward and turn something tragic into something positive.”

The group will also be holding a LifeSouth blood drive in honor of Casey.

It will take place Sunday, July 20, from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm in the Dollar Tree parking lot on Highway 72 in Athens.
