(CNN) — Imprisoned killer Joran van der Sloot is now a married man.
Van der Sloot, serving a 28-year sentence for killing a Peruvian woman, on Friday married his girlfriend Leidy Figueroa at the Lima prison where he’s being held, his attorney Maximo Altez told CNN en Espanol.
He is expected to become a father in September, when Figureoa is expected to give birth to their child, Altez said.
Van der Sloot, a Dutch national, initially made headlines when he was named the main suspect in the 2005 disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba.
He was never charged in Holloway’s disappearance, but he was indicted on federal charges of extortion and wire fraud, with American authorities accusing him of extorting money from Holloway’s mother by offering bogus information about her daughter’s disappearance.
In 2012, courts in Peru convicted van der Sloot of murdering Stephany Flores, 21, in his Lima hotel room in 2010.
