Women’s Center administrators surrender license, but confident they will open new clinic soon

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) –  Monday, the Alabama Women’s Center for Reproductive Alternatives voluntarily surrendered its license to operate.

The current facility does not meet the newly enacted safety requirements for abortion clinics to operate.
However, administrators believe they’ll soon be opening their doors again, in a new location.

“The clinic on Sparkman Drive is very close to being compliant already which is why we chose that location,” said Jayme Calhoun, a spokeswoman for Alabama Reproductive Rights Advocates.

In April, Governor Bentley signed a bill into law that raised safety requirements for clinics that provide abortions.  It required they meet the same standards as ambulatory care centers. Doctors must also have hospital admitting privileges.

The clinic on Sparkman already meets most of the requirements.

Administrators for the Women’s Center have hired contractors to make minimal changes to the property.

They plan to add additional exterior lighting, as well as a privacy fence around the property for patient privacy and protection.

Once the building meets state requirements, administrators will reapply for their operating license.

However, that may present another hurdle.

The proposed new location has been controversial. It is across the street from the future location of the Academy for Acadamics and the Arts, the former Ed White Middle School.

Anti-abortion protesters have raised concerns about the location being across from a school.

Yes I am sure the baby killing business will be back soon. Evil never rests. I would think that with all the awareness today that preventive measures (contraception) would do the job. Only extreme cases should abortion be used and never as a means of birth control.

Does this mean that the weirdo’s with their signs filming each other will be gone? What will all those old people do all day now?
