HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – It’s an annual ordeal for many seniors – navigating the changes to Medicare prescription drug coverage.
Locally, the Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments (TARCOG) is among the agencies that assist senior citizens with Medicare questions. TARCOG’s Area Agency on Aging serves residents in Dekalb, Jackson, Limestone, Madison and Marshall Counties.
According to a new report released by TARCOG, its clients saved a total of $859,305.18 this year, simply by selecting Medicare prescription drug plans that better suited their needs. The savings break down as follows:
Dekalb County: $115,520.20
Jackson County: $37, 429.02
Limestone County: $84,103.20
Madison County: $332,802.54
Marshall County: $289,450.22
Total savings in the five county region for the 3,966 Medicare beneficiaries who used TARCOG’s free services were $859,305.18
Presently, there are 30 plans in Alabama. Monthly premiums range from $12.06 to $134. Because the plans change annually and premiums go up and down, TARCOG officials urge all senior citizens to take a closer look at their options during the next open enrollment period which begins in October.
There is no charge for TARCOG’s services. Employees are available to answer any and all Medicare questions. They can also assist with filling out forms. The main TARCOG office is located at 5075 Research Drive in Huntsville. The office number is (256) 830-0818. There are also satellite offices throughout the region.
In addition to helping with Medicare concerns, TARCOG’s Area Agency on Aging also operates a meal program, provides legal services, insurance counseling, medication assistance, job placement services, in-home support services and caregiver support.
