Jackson County leaders speak on pros and cons of alcohol sales within the entire county

JACKSON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — With one of its smaller incorporated towns going wet in the last election and in light of budget issues and funding decreases, questions raise on whether it would benefit Jackson County as a whole to allow alcohol sales, but county leaders say there are pros and cons to that move.

The town of Hollywood voted to allow alcohol sales within the town limits.

It’s following three other incorporated towns and cities in Jackson County that already allow for it, but like many area counties, Jackson County itself is dry.

Jackson County Commission Chair Matthew Hodges says there are valid reasons as to whether it would be a good idea for the county, or not.

“I think some of the positives for the county in particular would be the revenue source,” Hodges says, “Obviously with the county’s financial situation that would be a very positive situation to have that additional revenue source.”

Then on the flip side Hodges says there are negatives to allowing alcohol to be sold.

“There’s still just a lot of concerns on how that would affect the ability to control that substance,” Hodges says.

This wet/dry proposal hasn’t come before the Commission in recent months but Hodges says it’s possible.

He says a potential affirmation wouldn’t be entirely up to the Commission.

“I think it would have to come from the citizens of Jackson County for it to ever happen,” Hodges says.

Within the county’s 13 incorporated towns and cities four are wet, with Hollywood being the most recent.

Not to mention all the TROUBLE it gets people into getting throwed in jail for DUI and and having to post bond go to court ect…all the other crap it brings along with it people dieing..And the pros are ? For the county to make that money on other peoples sorrow and heart ache.Matthew Hodges I can’t believe you said that “I think some of the positives for the county in particular would be the revenue source,” Hodges says, “ You as a EAGLE SCOUT up holding this. A scout is thrifty a scout finds better ways to make things happen. Not by supporting alcohol to cause heartaches to families ..Go after people in the county that is operating a business with licenses and endorsements on there business. The people who live in Jackson County drink alcohol just like everyone living everywhere else. The county is losing out on the alcohol sales because the residents are driving to other counties to purchase their alcohol. Does mamac think that by not making Jackson County wet, that no one in who lives there aren’t drinking alcohol? Wake up.

Yes, lotus10, I know first hand about alcohol being in Jackson County. My parents got drunk every weekend and fought each other and neighbors. So, yes there is alcohol everywhere you go Two wrongs don’t make a right. But Jackson County don’t need any more crimes either that alcohol brings with it. There is other means to get money heck Jackson County it might be the spending that needs attention. I suggested looking into the businesses that is operating with or without a license or endorsements. The county can go back 4 years of fees and penalties..Jackson County is even talking about put a fee on tags.Well don’t penalize every Jackson County resident. What about the ones NOT doing what they was pose to be doing. I had to get ALL my licenses and endorsements ect when I opened up my business. Had to live up to the “LAW” and other people can open up the same business as I and they don’t get in trouble for NOT having a license and endorsements. So, then if people don’t get in trouble bout the licenses and endorsements why the heck then shouldn’t everybody else just let ours run out and still operate. The law breakers get by with it why can’t others?

  • control issue

Going wet gives more control if it is decided than the how when where and who can and cant have the licence to do so at their bussines

  • control issue

It is againt the law to drive under any controled substance. Perscrptions have warnings but can not be arrested for under the influance. Dry or wet real issues of our world need to be concidered

  • Skillpot

I am not a drinker, smoker, or chewer, but, this wet-dry thing is just a little waste of time! Those who drink are going to go get it, where ever they can find it! Drinking is the sister/brother to the ‘original sin,’ so, why don’t we get along without the …?
