MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – A future Walmart development in Hazel Green raised concerns about traffic on the two-lane Charity Lane.
On Wednesday, the Madison County Commission approved two agreements, one with Croy Engineering, the other with the Alabama Department of Transportation to address the issue.
Both agreements would allow the county to start work expanding Charity Lane from it’s existing two lanes to five. They also approved a special permit agreement to begin installation of utilities and drainage systems on the U.S. 231/431 right-of-way.
“We’re going to put a new traffic signal in there to make the ingress and egress safer,” explained Commission Chair Dale Strong.
The safety of the narrow two-lane road has been called into question in the past.
Strong hopes expanding the road to 5 lanes will make the area safer for shoppers and commuters alike.
As the plan stands now, the development will have three access points on Charity Lane, and one on U.S. 231/431.
Developers would like to see the construction completed before the end of the year.
