HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - (al.com) Just as the Huntsville Stars have been the dominant team in the Southern League in the first two months of the season, they are also the dominant team when it comes to the All-Star roster.
Eight Stars were announced Tuesday as members of the Southern League North Division All-Star team, which will play the South squad on Tuesday, June 17 in Chattanooga. They are first baseman Nick Ramirez, third baseman Jason Rogers and pitchers Tyler Cravy, Drew Gagnon, David Goforth, Taylor Jungmann, Arcenio Leon and Brent Suter.
This news came barely 12 hours after the Stars clinched the first-half North championship with nearly two weeks remaining before the midway point of the season - guaranteeing that this final season of this Huntsville franchise will be extended.
It may not have been the ideal way to celebrate a pennant-clinching, as the Stars were pummeled Monday night by the Jackson Generals, 9-4. But before that game even ended, Huntsville had earned the title by virtue of the Tennessee Smokies' 10-5 loss to Birmingham.
The Stars are 39-19 on the half with 12 games remaining while the Smokies, swept last week by the Stars in a five-game series, are 26-31.
