Madison Students Win Global Award for being “Distracted”

MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) – Six years of “distraction” ended up in a world title for a high school in Madison.

A team of students from Bob Jones High School went from not even placing for six years at a Destination Imagination challenge to winning the whole global competition.

It took seven students to make the world “Distracted” in a good way.

“We are recognized as the best high school improv team in the world right now,” said Nathan Daniel, a graduate of Bob Jones High School who was a member of the team. “We beat 16 other countries and 83 other teams, so it means a lot.”

He and six other students call themselves “Distracted”.

They used that name to compete in a global challenge for “Destination Imagination” at the University of Tennessee.

“It teaches us to think on our feet, to think kinda outside the box,” said Shannon Walker, another team member and new graduate from Bob Jones High School.

“For six years, this team has been building to get to this point,” Rhonda Daniel, the team sponsor, said.

She went with the team each year they were invited to compete. But, they never had much luck.

“We’ve never even placed in the top ten, so just to place first is just amazing and we still can’t believe that it happened,” said Walker.

This year, the judges gave them an improvisational challenge ordering them to cross hot sand.

The team then had just a few minutes to assign roles, figure out how they would explain themselves and their solution to the problem, then act it out in a skit.

“We’re so comfortable with each other and we think everything each other says is so hilarious, there was no interruption, it was fluid.. it was flawless,” said Nathan Daniel.

The reward for their hard work came in the form of a shiny new trophy, medals, and priceless bragging rights.

Most of the students on the team graduated this year.
They’re considering competing again in the college level in the future.

There are also elementary and middle school levels of competition.
