Ga. Student in Hot Water Over Yearbook Quote

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A senior class vice president and leader at her high school was in hot water this week over a quote she had next to her picture in the school’s yearbook, WSB-TV reports.

In addition to her duties as a student body officer, Paris Gray is a member of SADD and the Beta Club at Mundy’s Mill High School in Clayton County, Ga.

The message appearing next to her picture was: “When the going gets tough just remember to Barium, Carbon, Potassium, Thorium, Astatine, Arsenic, Sulfur, Uranium, Phosphorus.”

The quote itself seems innocuous enough until you look up those elements on the periodic table and put together the symbols for each one:

Ba – Barium
C – Carbon
K – Potassium
Th – Thorium
At – Astatine
As – Arsenic
S – Sulfur
U – Uranium
P – Phosphorus

“Basically, it’s just me saying ‘Start all over again’,” Paris told WSB-TV.

But school administrators didn’t think it was funny once they decoded the message.

now thats a shame a smart student using her intelligence to make a good joke and she gets in trouble for it come on people get a life !!!!!!

For real people?? Y’all are getting bent out of shape because a girl uses her intelligence but it’s ok to have required reading books that have very inappropriate language. Wow! Priorities are so backwards!! Leave the young lady alone and move on to something worth talking about like preventing bullying in school!!
    Bravo to Miss Paris Gray!!

I could just imagine a group of 50+ year old fogie educators sitting in a room trying to decode a phrase that was popularized by a 90s rap song.

    • Karinttt

Keep on imagining us “old Fogies” doing that, Michael. We probably wouldn’t have wasted our time, as this matter is clearly a “so what?” moment. Us Old Fogies are a lot sharper than you think. And 50 is not old… Lost of viable people the world over are over 50. . You must be really young if your perception is that you’ll be an old Foggie by the time you reach 50. You’ll get there one day and I want to assure you, you will not have lost all your marbles or suffered a reduction in brain cells!! Isn’t that great to know?

They’re just mad because she was smarter than them. They actually had to look it up and decode it to know what it said! That is their main problem, she made them look bad and they can’t handle that! Well too late because now they are showing the entire world how ignorant they are!

I have to agree with school officials because this is published in the yearbook and lots of people see this. It isn’t a good look on the school, and furthermore, it isn’t a good look on the student either. I’m pretty sure she knew what she was writing and it wasn’t about starting over. Too late now, but they should have asked questions and approved/disapproved before it was submitted. I’m just being honest.

To Paris: You go girl! Most people are not going to get it anyways. You used your brains. You are proving to be an intelligent woman which scares a lot of people. I’m a 50 year old man and I think you rock!

seriously? school admin has nothing better to do? she is obviously a bright and intelligent girl..and she is just a kid..no harm..let it go..there are way bigger issues in the world than her yearbook quote..get over it and let her alone

How pitiful. She said “ass”. It isn’t the end of the world. Get over it administators, I am pretty sure your teachers have said worse in the classrooms.

Yet another example of the anal liberal insanity and idiocy that controls government schools today.

  • cindy lovell

UM, didn’t the teacher over the yearbook staff/club/committee have to approve the page? This is not this clever girl’s problem. While I don’t condone public profanity, I’m not exactly a linguistic saint, so who am I to judge? It’s funny!

  • KB

Ok so what?? I think its funny too! Who was the yearbook police that busted her and how much time did they spend deciphering this? So stupid.
