New Way to Apply for School Transfers
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Applications are now being accepted for majority to minority transfers in Huntsville City Schools. The option allows a student to transfer from a school in which his or her race is a majority to one in which he or she would be a minority. According to the school system’s website, the transfers are intended to “enhance desegregation.”
While such transfers are nothing new, the application process has changed. In years past, interested parents rushed to be the first in line at the Annie C. Merts Center – since the transfers were granted on a first-come, first-served basis. This year, all applications must be submitted online. Anyone who does not have a computer or internet access is invited to come to the Student Support Services Department at the Merts building, located at 200 White Street in Huntsville.
If the system receives more requests for transfer to a school than there are slots available, eligible students will be determined by lottery. The deadline for applications is May 31st. You can apply here.
