HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Mother’s Day is two days away – this Sunday. WHNT New 19’s Beth Jett is taking action to investigate misleading promises online for this holiday weekend.
Consumer watchdogs warn of email inbox scams geared toward greeting cards or deals that may look too good to be true.
Local Huntsville flower shop, Bishop’s Flowers is booked for Mother’s Day and is rejecting orders because they don’t have time to fill all of the orders. The store has also rejected online 50 orders.
“These are rejected orders that we have from our wire service,” said Jerry Williamson, co-owner of Bishop’s Flowers. “Orders that we cannot fill because they are specific in exactly what they want.”
He said the online wire services are misleading and warns consumers before ordering online. Often the arrangements are much smaller than they appear online. Online companies offer vases and flowers unavailable to local florists, which is disappointing to the customer.
“The sad part is they think we did the rip off instead of misleading advertising on the wire services,” Williamson said.
The Better Business Bureau advises consumers to check delivery policies or fees and watch for scams through email.
“In the past the biggest complaint we’ve had is non-delivery of flowers or not being delivered within the time frame,” said Michele Mason with the BBB.
Mason said the scam emails can often infect your computer with spyware or viruses.
“Bogus greeting cards,” Mason said. “You’ll get a message that the greeting card has been sent to you by a loved one and that’s the red flag because if someone sent you a card online, usually it’s going to tell you the exact name of the sender.
