Publix Opens With a Boom, What’s Next for Twickenham Square?

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The consensus is in, it’s convenient grocery shopping. Downtown residents are taking full advantage of the new Publix that just opened in Twickenham Square. However, now that the anchor tenant in the shopping center is open, many are wondering what business will open its doors next.

“There’s been several announcements about restaurants, Cajun Steamer, Taco Mama and a nail salon, a full service nail salon going in so those will all open over the course of the next several months,” said Chad Emerson, CEO of Downtown Huntsville, Inc.

Emerson wants Twickenham Square to be a place you can eat, live, and play. He said it’s quickly becoming just that. “You have Homewood Suites already open and then the Artisan Lofts you’ll see people moving in later summer into the fall,” he said.

The new Publix makes it appealing to everyone. People that live downtown can walk, but you’ll also see business suits and hospital scrubs dashing in and out for a quick bite of lunch.  Soon, there will be a place to escape the daily grind with a relaxing manicure, or a seafood dinner with friends. The development is on the fast track to becoming the first of many multi-use developments in downtown.

“It won’t always be the same design, won’t always be the same layout, but the concept is you can take multiple complimentary uses and you put them all together,” said Emerson. “If you drive there, maybe you’ll have dinner, maybe you’ll live there, maybe you’ll work there, maybe you’ll get groceries after dinner.”

Emerson said Twickenham Square should reach completion by Christmas 2014.
