Taking Action: Filing an Insurance Claim After the Storm
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — People around the Tennessee Valley are starting the process of putting the pieces of their lives back together following Monday’s severe weather. Part of that process is filing insurance claims for damages to your property.
(Rebekah McKinney, Lawyer): “Most people have never had a major insurance claim, they really don’t know what the process is, they really have no idea where to start,” said Rebekah McKinney with Watson McKinney, LLP in Huntsville.
It’s hard to think about all of the things you need to do when you’re walking through the rubble of your business or your home following a tornado. But in reality, there are things you need to get taken care of.
First of all, if you haven’t done so already, contact your insurance agent. They need to know what has happened to you. Secondly, start documenting the damage. Take photographs and make lists of everything you think you lost during the storm. Then make temporary fixes. Don’t make any permanent repairs until your agent tells you to but you should be able to protect your business or your home from further damage.
Contact your agent immediately. They want to help you and they know what you’re going through, they’ve likely seen this type of damage before. “That’s where your insurance agent helps because it is personal for us and we want to help you to get back to where you were pre-loss,” said Joe Demos with State Farm.

“It’s best if you keep a good record of what you’ve done, your communications with the insurance company,” said McKinney.
“Just documenting everything and kind of keeping a journal of everything of what’s going on,” said Demos. “You want everybody on the same page, communication is always key.”
