Guntersville Elementary Gets An All-American Lesson

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Guntersville Elementary students got a real life experience on a lesson they’ve been learning.

Inside Guntersville Elementary School Thursday Mrs. Burton’s second graders are hard at work before they head outside.

They’re excited, making it hard to sit still.

Thursday, they received a visit from a group of people who made a lesson they’ve been learning come to life. “We had the American Legion come and present our school with a new flag, because our flag had been flying for so long, it had faded,” Second grade teacher Mary Burton says, “So they had to retire it, so they got to give us a new flag.”

The entire school watched and took part in the ceremony.

The importance of those red, white, and blue colors is something Burton says she’s been going over and over for the last week  “They really have an understanding of the men and women that have fought for their freedoms and that it’s not just some cloth flying up there.”

So now a new, bright flag is flying over Guntersville Elementary. The old one is retired as it should be. The American Legion saw to that.

Thanks to the real-life lesson the group gave the students, now they understand why such a ceremony is done, and the importance of doing so.

“It’s something they’ll always remember,” Burton says.
