Women’s Tackle Football Catching on In Alabama

Huntsville, Ala. (WHNT) – Do not call it a man’s sport around everyone! There’s a group of women in Huntsville taking offense to the general idea that football is reserved for boys.

“You would be surprised to see their skill level,” Carmela Sullivan said this week while she took a quick break from coaching the Huntsville Tigers. Her team is a member of the Independent Women’s Football League or IWFL, a full-on tackle football league with teams across the country.

Whitney Palmer plays wide receiver for the Tigers, and feels like she is living out a dream every time she’s on the field.

“You never thought you would be able to put on your own pads, helmet, and jersey, and have your name represented on the back and it would be a women’s team,” said Palmer.

The Huntsville Tigers open up their 2014 season Saturday April 19th at Discovery Middle School in Madison. The game kicks off at 3:00 p.m.
