SHEFFIELD, Ala. (WHNT) - School Resource Officers are placed on campuses across the nation to protect the students and faculty in the school.
According to Sheffield police, a direct threat towards an SRO was made in a recent video posting by two students at Sheffield High School.
The threatening video was brought to the attention of the officer.
“When he observed it, he found language and comments on there that led him to believe that he could be in danger,” explained Sheffield Police Chief Greg Ray.
Chief Ray said the comments made by the two students stated they were going to get the resource officer’s gun from him and shoot him with it.
According to Ray, whether the comments on the video were made as a joke or not, police can’t and will not ignore them.
“We certainly hope that it’s not true and they never intended to anything that stupid,” stated Ray, “but we are certainly going to treat it as they did.”
Ray said the teens have not denied making the video, and have been charged in juvenile court with harassing communications.
According to Sheffield Schools Superintendent Tim Morgan, the students in question have been placed in alternative school until a full investigation can be completed by the school system.
At which point the student’s future with the school system will be decided by the school board.
