HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) –   Operation Green Team brought nature lovers together to relax and enjoy the wildlife and sounds of the Flint River.

They held an early Earth Day celebration at Hays Nature Preserve Saturday afternoon.

More than 70 Earth-friendly exhibits and vendors turned out to offer hands on activities and learning demonstrations for kids.

Several thousand people showed up to celebrate nature at the preserve. From a mass butterfly release to learning about community gardens, there was something to do for everyone.

Joy McKee with Operation Green Team says the fun at Hays Nature Preserve is year-round. “We’ve got free fishing here at the preserve, all we ask is that you don’t litter in this beautiful environment,” McKee says.

Hays puts bass in the preserve pond, so people visiting can fish without a license all year.
