HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) -- A vacant hotel sits on a prime piece of real estate in downtown Huntsville. The Holiday Inn near Big Spring Park shut its doors just before Christmas. Then, all of its assets were auctioned off. Now, many are wondering what the next phase is for the site.
"You walk through there and it's a pretty surreal experience," said Chad Emerson, CEO of Downtown Huntsville, Inc. "It's like someone took everything out of a hotel and the buildings still standing."
Emerson said hang in there, the ball is getting rolling soon. "It's a really important site so the city has been very deliberate in making sure we get a request for proposal that is just right," he said.
"We're at a point where we can be a little selective about what we want to happen on the property," said Michelle Jordan with the City of Huntsville. "But we do want something that will create energy in downtown Huntsville."
"We anticipate that in probably the next 4 weeks or so that that request for proposal will be released to the general development community," Emerson said. When that happens, city leaders say it's gong to be one of the more popular sites that's been made available in downtown Huntsville in a long time.
"Location, location, location," said Emerson. "That's usually 90 percent when it comes to development and this has location in spades."
