Huntsville, Ala. (WHNT) – Severe weather can strike at any time and whether the forecast calls for flooding or tornadoes – North Alabama is often at risk.

Emergency Radio Free is an award-winning app that connects you to live frequencies – handy in a crisis where you’re cut off from the usual channels of communication.

Emergency Radio can be downloaded free for Apple devices and offers a selection of frequences to listen to including those for local police, fire and EMS. You can also connect with NOAA weather communications and Ham Radio frequencies.

You can search by state or locality, using GPS functionality, to see a list of nearby channels in your community. Connecting to those local channels allows the user to gain valuable information, as well as insight on the movements of emergency teams, during a disaster recovery.

For more digital tools to keep you “weather aware” this April (usually the worst month for severe weather in North Alabama) watch for Michelle Stark’s morning Click Picks, weekdays from 4:30 – 7:00 a.m. on WHNT News 19 This Morning, April 7th – 11th.
