HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – The Tennessee Valley has proven itself to be a community that cares about its veterans.
Now a new organization is helping homeless and struggling veterans gain their footing and find housing.
Priority Veteran opened its doors in January. It is partnered with United Way of Central Alabama, with offices in four cities across the state.
It’s immediate goal is to reach at least 500 homeless veterans, get them off the streets and into homes of their own.
“We are trying to get them, find out what they need, make sure they get the VA benefits, and provide assistance whether it’s case management, financial stability, help them find a job,” explained Jody Johnson, a case worker for Priority Veteran.
Roger Thomas is one local veteran who has already found housing through their program.
“I was living in Las Vegas, I lost my job, and lost my home, and pretty much was on the streets,” Thomas recalled. “My family lives in Huntsville so I came here with no place, just to try to get away and start all over again.”
Thomas was pointed in the direction of Priority Veteran. He soon found a job, and with help from the organization and community members soon found an apartment within his budget.
“I found a good deal at this apartment for a one bedroom, unfurnished, with nothing in it. I told my brother I was going to get a blow up bed to put in it,” said Thomas.
But the apartment managers had a surprise in store. When Thomas picked up his keys and walked into his new home, the apartment was entirely furnished.
“It was like Christmas for me because they had my entire apartment stocked. Not just a bed, but dresser drawers, and a sofa, and even a TV.”
Johnson says it is generous donations like this that help them in their mission. They are always looking for clothing to give to veterans for job interviews, cars for transportation, or even furniture.
