Some Families Ordered to Stay in Homes During Stanford Dr. Standoff

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - Many neighbors of the Stanford Drive shooting and standoff were ordered to evacuate while the situation was still ongoing Friday morning, shortly after 1 a.m.

However, police said some people needed to stay in their homes because it wasn't safe to leave.

Brittany Nichols called WHNT News 19 around 3 a.m. to ask for updates on the situation.

Police reported significant gunfire at the scene -- and Nichols said she heard all of it.

"I got a phone call from the police department -- they told us to get down, stay as low as we can, they couldn't get us out of our house safely.  And at that point, we got down and we heard about 10-12 more gunshots," Nichols said.

Nichols says she and her family are very shaken up over the ordeal, but added she has been praying throughout the night for her and the officers' safety.

The standoff ended about 3:30 a.m. Friday when officers entered the suspect's home.  The suspect was killed.
