UPDATE: Circus Train Arrives Early, Walk Finished

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – The Greatest Show on Earth is in Huntsville – the train arrived earlier than planned.

The Circus Walk is finished – it was moved up to 1:30 p.m. from its original time of 3 p.m.  The train arrived around 11 a.m. Tuesday.

People stood along the route to watch circus workers lead the animals from the railroad depot on Church Street, down Monroe Street to the Von Braun Center.  The walk was approximately half a mile.

Tickets are still available for Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey: Legends at the VBC.  There are several shows from April 2-6.

I wish Huntsville would quit promoting things like this including Rodeos and the upcoming Circus. Animal abuse is rampant in both events and should not be condoned. For those of you thinking of attending this event and the circus, please watch this short film hosted by Bob Barker, ‘No Fun for Elephants’. Hopefully it will change your mind and with others we can end the useless abuse of those animals used for enterntainment purposes.

It is a sad state of affairs in this country when people do not care that these poor elephants (the most magnificent animals on earth and one of the most intelligent) must spend 50 or so years enduring the worst torture imaginable just so that they and their children can be entertained for a few minutes once a year. If you believe the lies the circus tells about how well they treat elephants, then you just want to believe in that fantasy. There are video of and people who have witnessed horrible beatings, chaining, sadistic training methods used to break infant elephants’ spirits beginning at age 2. And trainers who have testified to it. Google it if you don’t believe. Some of the videos are so horrible, I couldn’t bear to finish watching. It has been proven in court that Ringling Brothers Circus abuses it’s elephants. In 2011, Kenneth Feldman, owner of Ringling, agreed to pay the largest fine ever assessed by the USDA for animal cruelty. Look at the UDSA website that lists all the many animal cruelty violations against Ringling & all other circuses. BTW the USDA also advises of the many elephants that are ill with tuberculous that is transmittable to humans. One of the Ringling elephants was recently banned from performing in Tennessee by public officials because it had active TB. I wonder if it is performing in Huntsville? You may want to check out the many instances of elephants going berserk to the point of killing their trainers; at least one instance occurred during a performance in the ring in Hawaii, after which the elephant bolted out of the arena on a rampage that did not end until it was gunned down in the street by police- took many bullets and a long time to stop it. Sad. I
took my kids to the circus until I became aware of the high price these animals must pay for our entertainment. I was told by administrators at the VBC that they would stop booking the circuses when people stopped buying tickets. So go to the circus if you must but do not be in denial about the behind the scenes ugliness for pure greed that your money makes possible. Also, my question to WHNT news is where is the reporting on the circus’s abuse of the elephants (and other animals) and the risk to the public’s health and safety in attending circus performances?

  • Roger

I too hope the acts with the animals dies out in time because their living conditions and treatment are so cruel.

  • William

    Jamie and Roger,
Will you two please go spout your garbage somewhere else. Your taking a event that people enjoy and using it to bash an industry. If you don’t want to see it don’t go. Otherwise keep your opinions to yourself. I like millions of people enjoy the circus. Their comments only prove one thing, that crazy people still exist.

    • CHRIS

WHY IS IT PEOPLE ARE CRAZY BECAUSE THEY TELL PEOPLE THE TRUTH THAT MIGHT NOT OTHERWISE KNOW IT…THERE IS PROVEN DOCUMENTATION ABOUT THE ABUSE THAT GOES ON WITH BEATING THOSE ANIMALS AND USING BULL HOOKS ON THEM..PWOPLE ARE IGNORANT THAT DONT LOOK AT EVERY PART OF SOMEONES COMMENTS OR MAYBE YOU JUST LIGHT WATCHING THE ABUSED ANIMALS PERFORM FOR YOUR PLEASURE.. IF YOU HAVE A DOG OR ANYTHING WHY DONT YOU GO GET A HOOK AND STICK IT IN HIS EARS, HIS BACK SIDE AND MAKE HIM PERFORM FOR YOUR FRIENDS…SINCE ITS SUCH GARBAGE POOR UNEDUCATED PEOPLE…JUST DONT SAY ITS GARBAGE BECAUSE ITS TRUE AND TELL EVERYONE THAT YOU DONT CARE THAT THEY ARE ABUSED AND BEATEN AND YOU JUST WANT TO WATCH THEM PERFORM

    • Shon

Thank you William!!! I have never been to the Circus and I am so happy to attend this event. I took the rest of the day off just to see the Circus Walk because I may not see nothing like this again. Early birthday gift to myself.

    • Jamie

William, why don’t you go and look at the 350+ comments that have been made on this exact article that WHNT posted to their Facebook page. The majority of people are against this event. I am proud to be included amongst those people you call ‘crazy’ than to stand by and let something like this occur. Cheers!

      • John

The majority of people are against the event… interesting. I guess thats why hundreds of tickets are sold each year and the circus keeps coming to Hsv… I guess people.must.like.it.

    • Adi

Well geez William I didn’t know your entertainment was more important than the well-being of these animals. They are wild animals and belong in the wild!!!

    • Elephant Warrior

Is it fun for you to see these poor animals “entertaining”? If so you are not better than the animal abusers.

  • Lucy

William, Why would they “go spout their garbage somewhere else” or keep their opinions to themselves? Seems like this is the perfect platform for their cause and if you’re claiming that “crazy people” shouldn’t post, well then… your ignorant comment should be the first one deleted.

  • William

Ok people, let me make this simple. If you don’t like it don’t go see it. But don’t ruin things that others enjoy. Please just keep you opinions about them to yourself and go away. No one is forcing you to go. So please once again don’t ruin people’s enjoyment of a good show so you can spout your agenda. This is not the place to do it. Plus I must ask Chris “you mad bro?” What is with people nerd raging over this? Lucy, I call these people crazy because they are more worried about animal life then person’s life.

    • CHRIS

NO NOT MAD WILLIAM JUST LOVE TALKING TO UNEDUCTATED IGNORANT PEOPLE….WHO REFUSE TO RESEARCH OR LOOK AT SOMETHING SOMEBODY SAYS WITHOUT CALLING THEM CRAZY…REMEBER WILLIAM YOU CALLED EVERYONE CRAZY FOR HAVING AN OPINION…I DIDNT CALL YOU CRAZY FOR HAVING AN OPINION…BUT LIKE MOST UNEDUCATED PEOPLE… YOU GO THROUGH LIFE WITH YOUR BLINDERS ON AND IF THEY DONT AGREE WITH YOU THEY ARE CRAZY AS YOU SAY…WHATS WRONG WITH PUTTING ALL THE INFORMATION ON THE TABLE AND LET PEOPLE MAKE AN EDUCATED CHOICE, OH YEAH I FORGOT THEY DONT AGREE WITH YOU…MAN THEY MUST BE CRAZY…LOL

      • CHRIS

nerd raging…thats funny …like i said uneducated people…its nerd raging or crazy because somebody other then william has an opinion lol…such a joke

  • Janos Poleretzky

What about people who abuse pets. Circus animals are well taken care of. It is in the best interest for the Circus to take care of these animals. The elephants alone cost more than 3 times the cost of your Cadillac. They have to insure that these animals are trained , well fed , healthy , and mentally sound. The abuse you mention is not from the Barnum Circus. The Barnum Circus is a high end production that take care of their animals unlike some zoos that kill their animals because they are sick , old , or they just want to make room for other animals. You should direct your anger to other mediums to the attention of people who actually give a crap about your cause. Please do not write about something you know nothing about.

  • William

Chris, last time I checked typing in caps is the same as shouting. Plus I am educated. But this is not a animal rights blog. This is a news channel. I might add that if your against it don’t go. Just leave the people who do want to enjoy a good show alone. But I am sure your going to continue to rage and name call. Go for it.
Jamie, I reiterate I don’t care. This is not the place to put it.

    • CHRIS

me call …you said everyone was crazy that was saying that so i think you started the name calling …and your right i dont have to go and i wont…but like you said dont tell everyone what they really do to the animals to get the good shows you want to watch just be quiet and dont let anyone know what they do to them and everything will be ok…oh ok i get your thinking like i said blinders…have fun at the show william lol

    • Jamie

Enjoy your show William…cause this may be the last one you see if we have anything to do with it. Next year there will be hundreds of people protesting this event and others like it! And your comment about this being a NEWS CHANNEL and not and ANIMAL RIGHTS BLOG…makes this the PERFECT platform on which to protest and voice our opinions. The more people that complain about this, the more someone will notice. I have many friends in the animal rights arena in this country and others and they have taken notice to our protesting over the past and they will assist us and making our voices louder. So enjoy your show. We are just here to make you aware of that which you obviously wish not to see.

      • John

Jamie, I am just curious… do you have a career? Are you one of the angry PETA people who is upset the schedule changed and now you cant be there to protest? Guess what… the Circus is here, and WILL be here next year too, and people WILL buy tickets. Maybe you should go adopt ALL the homeless dogs from the local animal shelter on Triana instead of worrying about elephants.

Good grief…. I bet you are a middle-aged lonely, divorced lady huh. sad.

  • William

Chris, me call? Some needs to go back to school. Well it seems to me a minority of people hate the circus. So have fun going it alone. I will enjoy the show while you sit home alone. While I enjoy life with humanity all around me.

    • jamiekcain

We will not be GOING IT ALONE, William! I’ll be surrounded by some of the most compassionate, loving, caring, generous, most awesome people you will never know! I would rather be surrounded by animal loving “crazy” people any day than stand in the shadow of a blind,ill-informed, shell of a person!

    • John

Thank you William… let Jamie sit at home and be angry.. while the circus continues as it has for years. PETA people wasting time and efforts. We are going as well…and we will enjoy it.

  • Regina Pipes

I’ve attended many circus and been up close and watched how the elephants are taken care of. I have never seen any elephant treated badly. I’ve seen them be bathed, feed and taken great care of better than some of our aged and homeless. I am sure it does happen but don’t blame everyone unless you can prove it. I did see a dog act once that upset me but the dogs seem to be enjoying it. Saw the dogs after the show and they looked fine. Same them with their owners and they were loving on the dogs.

  • William

Wow, such caring people who get upset so easy. I laugh at how you get so frazzled at my comments. Continue talking, I need a good laugh. Plus I saw a thousand people here at the walk. So think your minority will be snuffed out by the cries of joy when we see the show.

  • Julie

Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey actually spend millions of dollars helping animals. Not only do they have a pretty amazing Center for Elephant Conservation they also have a Big Cat Conservation where they help animals. I don’t doubt there are circuses out there that mistreat animals. But that doesn’t mean Ringling Bros. is one of them. And how do you know the Elephants don’t enjoy what they are doing. Everyday people teach dogs to catch Frisbees and do tricks and the dogs love it. I don’t understand how this is different. I am sure someone will make the argument that dogs are domesticated animals and that’s why its different. But dogs are only domesticated because we made them become domesticated. Weren’t they once wild also?

    • jamie

Julie…seriously?… “And how do you know the Elephants don’t enjoy what they are doing?”

Uhhhhh…cause they have.no.voice! How do you know that they don’t like it? Cause there are videos out there that shows them whining, crying, and moaning as they are beat into submission to perform a trick during rehearsal. Also…they ‘appear’ to enjoy performing for you because they are afraid of the consequences of ‘not’ performing the trick correctly. As you sit in the stand eating your $10 snow cone and $12 hotdog, pay close attention to the trainers as they ‘coax’ the elephants, tigers, etc into doing their tricks. Pay close attention to what they have in their hands. Whether it be a stick, pipe, or the infamous bullhook…it is there to make sure the animal performs the trick. It’s a tool used to intimadate the animal. That’s how you know they dont enjoying doing what they do.

  • Jamie

Hey John! Yes I am very educated. In fact I have three college degrees. I have a very good career working in the government industry. I am a 40 year old man with multiple outlets to keep myself busy. Animal rights is only but one of those outlets. I spend a lot of my time doing well by others. I work at my ‘normal’ job for 8-10 hours / day and the rest of the time I spend with people that have like interest. I assist homeless dogs, cats, pigs, spiders, iguanas, sheep, foxes, turtles, etc to find new homes. I support homeless men and women by donating clothes, food, and other goods. I volunteer my time to feed people who have no food. And I still have time to go out with my HOT GIRLFRIEND to enjoy a meal and movie. So now you know!

  • CHRIS

man, ur rright william i need to go back to school so i can be just like you….lol william you are just a trouble maker that spouts off at the mouth trying to get a rise out of everybody and it is working…i just dont understand your argument still do you know or dont know what they do to the elephants, if you dont then maybe you should look, if you do and enjoy that kind of thing fine…but dont call these people crazy for explaining the elephants and other animals side to the story and how they are treated. everybody should be able to voice there opinion without being called crazy for caring about animals…. like i said i doubt you have any pets or anything so you probably dont understand anyways its like trying to talk to a rep. well nevermind thats another topic have fun at the show bro lol

  • CHRIS

and julie teaching dogs tricks and stuff thats fine and perfect but i never had to use a bull hook on him to get him to catch the frisbee, thats the diffrence and yes research the elephant huome ringling has and look at the court cases they have lost over there treatment of the animals they were fined for it but with the millons they make it was pocket change to them but its everybodys god given right to go watch the show and its my right to feel and say what i want to about it…thats whats fun about living in america..unless you are william you have to think like him or your crazy lol

  • alexandra

All forms of abuse are wrong. Why should I keep quiet about it? I care abiut these animals. There are photos and videos of Ringling abusing the elephants. As an animal lover, I will boycott any industry that harms, abuses, tortures, animals to gain profit or for any other selfish reason. These animals deserve so much better. To be free, away from the hands of human kind. If you cant directly help, at least dont hurt an animal. Admire them from a distance. Kids can have fun many other ways. Dont teach them to disrespect other living beings.

  • William

Chris I know what I am talking about. I will enjoy the show along with thousands. I hope people out there continue to enjoy them and support them as well as the view point I put forth.

  • Janos Poleretzky

ASPCA payed the Barnum Circus 9.3 million dollars in Dec. Of 2012 . This was to help pay for legal costs in ASPCA ‘s failed lawsuit against the circus. ASPCA used and payed a retired worker to falsely testify against the circus. ASPCA received 111 million dollars in donations that year. They had no problem paying. They just couldn’t afford commercials that year. Our elephants are loved and cared for in an extreme way. They are special. Each elephant costs the Circus $5000. A month to care for.

  • Maggie

Just google Ringling Brothers and open the training of the baby elephant that is tied and being broken using electric prods and bullhooks. Pitiful! And, it takes more than $5,000 a month to properly take care of an elephant. Check out The Elephant Sancturary in Hohenwald, TN.

  • Jim

OK circus haters……do you own any leather products like shoes, belts, wallets…use soap !!!!
    Just asking..

    • Jamie

      Hey Jim!

      My answer is : no!

I am vegan and do not consume or purchase any item, material, or derivative of animals. I can only answer for myself. To assume otherwise would make me a hypocrite. Your question, in fact, is the most played card used by those that do otherwise to contradict that which I believe is a com passionate, cruelty free lifestyle. I do not speak bad of those that do otherwise but take the platform of education and to enlighten those that do to the negative impacts on oneself and the environment that consumption of animal products has on the environment…but that is another topic

    • Jamie

And to answer your question more precisely, my shoes are made of canvas, my belt of cotton, and my wallet of hemp! So no!

  • Kim

I’m surprised at all the childish comments between GROWN people on this page. We are all entitled to our opinions and beliefs. Wether you support the circus or you don’t we are all individuals who thanks to the the blood, sweat and tears of our American soldiers are free to say and do what we want. I’m not saying either side is right I’m just saying it’s our free right to have an opinion and decide for ourselves what we believe. To belittle and resort to name calling because someone else does not share that opinion is childish. We are all DIFFERENT. Let’s accept the fact that some people do not share the same likes or dislikes as you do, good or bad, and REPECT that instead of resorting to unnecessary drama.

  • KB

Do any of you people sleep with these animals to see that they are soooo abused?? NO! You rely on what you see on TV. Ignorant!

    • Jamie

KB? Were you with the guy that got shot last week in south Huntsville? Were you with the people that were killed or injured by a mudslide in Washington? Do you believe there is a large plane is missing somewhere over the Southern Indian Ocean? I doubt you were personally involved with any of these stories. However, I bet you take these stories and what was told to you newscasters “on tv” to be true and you believe them. So your ‘rely on what you see in tv’ argument makes you ignorant!

  • William

Lol. I went to the show and guess what. A grand total of 10 PETA protesters. They are a joke. This just proves that the “crazy” people are just that, crazy. So no fear everyonecelse. The circus shall continue for generations to come.
